KEY WEST, Fla. — A tragic boating incident off the coast of Key Largo on Saturday morning resulted in the death of a young man and left two others injured, officials said. Emergency response teams rushed to the scene following a distress call just after 10:25 a.m.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the accident occurred near Card Sound, a noted area northwest of North Carson Road and Pumpkin Key. Emergency crews, including multiple Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) fire boats, two Air Rescue helicopters, as well as U.S. Coast Guard and FWC personnel, were swiftly dispatched to the accident site.
Rescue efforts involved a coordinated response from different agencies. MDFR’s Air Rescue unit was able to evacuate two individuals to Jackson South Trauma Center for medical treatment. Divers from the U.S. Coast Guard recovered a third person from the water. Tragically, this individual, later identified as 21-year-old Eytan M. Genoune of Boynton Beach, succumbed to his injuries.
Preliminary findings from the FWC suggest that the incident involved a 34-foot Nor-Tech vessel carrying three passengers. The craft was heading south when a sudden maneuver caused all occupants to be ejected into the water. The exact reason behind the sudden turn and subsequent accident is still under investigation.
This event marks the second significant boating accident in the Florida Keys within just a few days. Earlier, a woman from Hialeah lost her life, and five others were thrown overboard during a powerboat race, intensifying concerns about marine safety in the region.
