New Delhi, India – Tragedy struck in central Delhi after a sudden deluge caused a fatal flood at a local coaching center, leading to the deaths of three civil services aspirants. Delhi Fire Services sprung into action, facing severe challenges in their rescue operations due to the extreme weather conditions, authorities reported on Sunday.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening when heavy rains inundated the basement of the building in Old Rajinder Nagar, a hub for civil services exam preparation. According to DFS Chief Atul Garg, the service received the distress call around 7:10 p.m. and quickly deployed five fire tenders to confront the emergency, which was compounded by unusually high water levels.
Garg explained that the normal strategy of pumping out water failed as the relentless downpour maintained water levels equal both inside the basement and on the streets. The DFS teams had to wait for natural receding of the street water to effectively commence extraction from the inundated basement.
Adding to the complication, the building lacked its own pumping facilities, a critical oversight that exacerbated the response efforts. In a stark revelation, it was disclosed that the basement, documented in official records as a store room, was illicitly converted into a library or classroom, raising serious questions about compliance with fire and building safety norms.
Following the disaster, Delhi Police took immediate action, arresting the owner and a coordinator of the coaching center. They face charges under multiple sections including culpable homicide. An FIR has been lodged at the Rajinder Nagar Police Station, marking the beginning of an intensive inquiry into the incident.
Deputy Commissioner of Police M Harsha Vardhan confirmed that the suspects, identified as Abhishek Gupta and Deshpal Singh, are in custody as investigations continue.
