SAN LEANDRO, Calif. — A late-night stroll turned tragic when a woman was fatally shot while walking with her boyfriend and their dogs at an East 14th Street intersection. The incident occurred around 11:10 p.m. Thursday, drawing immediate police attention and community shock.
Security footage captured the couple walking hand-in-hand just moments before the attack. In the video, they can be seen approaching the intersection of East 14th and Williams Street when a dark sedan is seen stopping at a stop sign. The vehicle reportedly made a sudden move into the intersection, shortly followed by the sound of a gunshot, prompting witnesses to rush into action. Police arrived to find the woman suffering from a single gunshot wound to her torso.
According to Lt. Abe Teng of the San Leandro Police, the victim was quickly taken to a nearby hospital but sadly did not survive her injuries. The boyfriend and their pets were uninjured during the incident.
Investigators swiftly distributed a description of the shooter’s vehicle, leading to the arrest of 21-year-old Rohith Sunil in Dublin approximately an hour later. Sunil is now facing murder charges after being apprehended in a black Mercedes. Authorities confirmed a handgun connected to the shooting was recovered during the investigation.
So far, police have found no evidence of prior contact between the victim and the suspect, leaving many in the community on edge as they grapple with the random nature of the violence. The identities of both the victim and her boyfriend have yet to be released, and it remains unclear whether they were residents of the area. The couple’s dogs were taken to a shelter for care following the incident.
Community reactions have ranged from disbelief to grief, with local residents expressing their shock over the violence. “It’s unheard of to think a simple walk could end like this,” said neighbor Hildie Spritzer. “It’s horrifying that someone walking dogs could face such danger.” Others emphasized the need for better mental health resources, with Adrian Scott remarking, “This kind of senseless act makes you realize how fragile safety can be.”
This incident echoes a similar case from just last month, when another dog-walker was killed a mile away on East 14th. In that case, 47-year-old Ryan M. Christie was shot, with authorities linking the crime to a personal dispute. Lt. Matthew Barajas stated that while both events are tragic, there is currently no evidence to suggest a connection between them.
As the investigation continues, the community remains in mourning, searching for answers and a sense of security amid rising concerns over public safety.
