BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A devastating shooting at a local nightclub in Birmingham has left four people dead and at least nine others injured, authorities confirmed Sunday. The violent outbreak occurred late Saturday night, disrupting what was a birthday celebration at the venue located in the northern part of the city.
Officers from the Birmingham Police Department (BPD) responded to the distress call from the nightclub situated on the 3400 block of 27th Street North at approximately 11:08 p.m. Upon their arrival, police discovered several individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical teams provided immediate assistance, but despite their efforts, four victims were pronounced dead at the scene and at the hospital.
The deceased have been identified by authorities as Stevie McGhee, 39, from Birmingham, Markeisha Gettings, 42, also from Birmingham, Angela Weatherspoon, 56, from Center Point, and Lerandus Anderson, 24, of Center Point. McGhee was found on a sidewalk adjacent to the nightclub, while Gettings and Weatherspoon were inside the premises. Anderson succumbed to his injuries at UAB Hospital, where additional victims were being treated, ranging in condition from stable to critical.
Initial investigations suggest that the shooting ensued following an altercation during the nightclub’s birthday event. Reports indicate that gunfire originated from the street outside the venue, targeting the attendees inside. Police are currently analyzing whether the earlier altercation inside the nightclub is directly linked to the gunfire.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection to the quadrant homicide. The Birmingham Police Department is receiving assistance from federal agencies to apprehend those responsible for the shootings. A public appeal has been made by the police urging anyone with information to come forward and assist in their ongoing investigation.
In a statement released Sunday morning, the BPD expressed its deep condolences to the families of the victims and to all those affected by this tragedy. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin also addressed the incident, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to seeking justice swiftly and urged the community to assist by sharing any valuable information.
