Tragic Minneapolis Church Shooting Revealed: Shooter Purchased Handgun Just Days Before Attack, Gun Shop Owner Shares Frightening Details

Minneapolis, Minnesota—A tragic shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church during a school Mass left two children dead and 21 others injured. The assailant, identified as 23-year-old Robin Westman, took his own life following the incident, which unfolded on Aug. 27.

Investigators revealed that Westman legally purchased a .38 Special revolver just four days before the shooting. Kory Krause, owner of Frontiersman Sports, a local gun shop, confirmed that Westman visited the store on Aug. 23, where he spent considerable time exploring various firearms. Video footage from the shop depicted Westman handling rifles and chatting amicably with both employees and customers, raising no alarms about his intentions.

Krause noted that during Westman’s visit, he engaged in a lengthy discussion about different types of firearms and ammunition, displaying both enthusiasm and knowledge. “He appeared friendly and genuine; there were no signs of distress or troubling behavior,” Krause stated. “Everyone who interacted with him described him as normal.”

Upon completion of the background check through the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System, the store received a “proceed” notification, allowing Westman to complete the purchase without any issues. Krause expressed heartbreak over the tragedy and emphasized that his team is highly trained to identify potential threats, yet in this case, nothing seemed amiss.

Westman had a history connected to Annunciation Catholic Church, having attended both the church and the associated school. According to court documents, he was known previously as Robert Paul Westman and had changed his name in 2019.

The implications of this incident have prompted discussions about gun laws and mental health awareness. As communities mourn the loss and grapple with understanding the circumstances that led to the shooting, local officials are focusing on ensuring safety in schools and places of worship.

Investigators continue to gather details about Westman’s background to gain insight into his motivations. Krause mentioned that the staff at Frontiersman Sports, who pride themselves on their compliance with safety protocols, are seeking answers as they reflect on the traumatic events.

These distressing incidents raise questions about the efficacy of existing gun control measures and the mental health support systems available, as communities strive to prevent further tragedies of this nature.
