Glendale, Arizona — A mass shooting at a busy restaurant during a community celebration has resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries, heightening fears over gun violence in the United States. The incident occurred at El Camaron Gigante Mariscos & Steakhouse around 7:45 p.m. on Sunday, where patrons had gathered for an annual Cinco de Mayo event.
The Glendale Police Department confirmed that three individuals lost their lives and five others sustained injuries. Officer Moroni Mendez addressed the media at the scene, emphasizing the chaotic atmosphere as families and friends celebrated. “There were a lot of people attending an event here. We urge anyone with information to come forward, as we are committed to conducting a thorough investigation for the sake of the victims,” Mendez said.
Authorities believe that more than one shooter may have been involved in the incident, although they reassured the public there is no ongoing threat. “We have detained several individuals as we determine their roles—whether they are suspects, victims, or witnesses,” Mendez added. The identities and ages of those who died have not yet been disclosed.
Witnesses recounted the chaotic scene, describing a rapid succession of gunfire that initially confused attendees. “There were families, including children, enjoying the celebrations when we heard shots,” one witness told reporters, recounting the harrowing moments punctuated by silence before more rounds rang out. This annual event commemorates Mexico’s victory at the Battle of Puebla, but it ended in tragedy.
As investigations continue, police are piecing together the events leading up to the shooting. Injuries sustained by those affected included gunfire wounds and shrapnel injuries. The police department remains focused on gathering testimonies from the large crowd present during the shooting.
Such incidents are becoming increasingly common across the United States, where nearly 47,000 gun-related deaths have been reported this year alone. The frequency of mass shootings in venues such as shopping malls, schools, and places of worship has instilled a sense of fear in many American communities, particularly among vulnerable groups like women, children, and the elderly.
This tragic incident in Glendale underscores the urgent need for solutions to address gun violence and ensure the safety of public spaces. As investigators seek to understand the motives behind this shooting, the local community is left grappling with the aftermath of the violence that disrupted a night meant for celebration.
