HOUSTON — A deadly series of events began in Louisiana where a Lyft driver was found murdered, leading to a fatal incident on Houston’s Beltway 8.
Lawanna J. Lewis, 62, from Lake Charles, was discovered dead in a ditch on Friday morning, with investigators stating she had been shot in the head multiple times. Lewis was on duty as a Lyft driver at the time of the tragic encounter, and authorities confirmed her vehicle was stolen.
As the investigation unfolded, Louisiana officials on Friday night linked the stolen car to a separate incident in Texas. Around 10 p.m. that evening, Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies spotted the vehicle on Beltway 8, prompting a pursuit when officers attempted to pull it over. The driver, identified as Tristan A. Bush, 26, led deputies on a brief chase through a nearby parking lot.
Tristan Bush and a passenger, Ethan I. Bush, 23, exited the vehicle and fled in different directions. Tristan was apprehended shortly after in a nearby neighborhood. Meanwhile, Ethan’s escape ended tragically when he ran onto the highway, where he was struck by a passing truck.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but Ethan Bush was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. Authorities indicated that the truck driver remained at the scene and was cooperative, exhibiting no signs of impairment.
In the wake of the unfolding events, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office announced murder charges against Tristan Bush. His bond has been set at $2.5 million, and he is currently in custody in Harris County, where he awaits extradition back to Louisiana.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about safety for ride-sharing drivers and the potential dangers associated with carjackings. Investigators are continuing to delve into the circumstances surrounding Lewis’s death, as the community grapples with the implications of such violence.
As details continue to emerge, both the Harris County and Calcasieu Parish law enforcement agencies remain focused on bringing justice to Lewis’s family while addressing the violent crime that led to these tragic outcomes.
