Tragic Loss: Teen Survivor of Family Murder-Suicide Passes Away at 19 After Inspiring Journey

West Valley City, Utah — A tragic chapter has closed with the passing of Sha Reh, the sole survivor of a catastrophic murder-suicide that claimed the lives of his immediate family in December 2024. Sha, who was only 19 years old when he died on January 11, 2026, was discovered critically injured at the scene of the incident, which left five family members dead.

Authorities reported that the event unfolded within the Reh household, where Sha was found suffering from a gunshot wound. His father, Dae Reh, 42, was believed to have taken the lives of his wife, Bu Meh, 38, and their children—sisters Kristina Ree, 8, and Nyay Meh, 2, and brother Boe Reh, 11—before turning the weapon on himself.

Despite the injury that resulted in the loss of his vision, Sha exhibited remarkable resilience. After undergoing a significant recovery period, he enrolled at the Utah School for the Deaf and Blind in January 2025. There, he learned to communicate through Braille and worked toward living a more independent life.

News of Sha’s untimely death was shared by his extended family via a GoFundMe page, which has also been set up to assist with funeral expenses. A heartfelt statement from relatives expressed their overwhelming grief: “It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Sha Reh. He passed away unexpectedly in the home of his aunt and uncle.”

Over the last year, Sha had become a symbol of hope and perseverance. He had spoken publicly about his commitment to maintaining a positive outlook despite facing significant challenges. In interviews, he often drew parallels between his journey of learning Braille and his family’s transition from Myanmar to the United States.

His faith played a pivotal role in his recovery. Sha, who was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, stated that his spirituality provided him with strength. “I strive to do good things in this world,” he remarked. “I am very grateful and blessed to have this opportunity to be happy.”

In their statement, Sha’s family also expressed gratitude to the first responders and Salt Lake County officials who provided assistance during the tragic incident. They highlighted the tremendous emotional toll this loss continues to impose on their community, emphasizing the need for compassion and support.

As the community mourns the loss of a young man who faced unfathomable grief yet inspired others with his determination, the story of Sha Reh remains a poignant reminder of both tragedy and resilience in the face of adversity.
