Tragic Loss: Community Gathers to Honor Elajia Whitley After Fatal Shooting by Ex-Boyfriend

ATLANTA, Ga. – The community is coming together to mourn the loss of Elajia Johnae Whitley, a 21-year-old woman who was tragically shot outside a shopping center in Duluth. The incident, which occurred on October 31, ended when her ex-boyfriend, Caprice Hudson, took his own life following a police chase in Columbia County.

Whitley’s funeral services are scheduled for Friday, November 21, at 1 p.m. at the Gregory B. Levett and Sons Funeral Home in Conyers. Prior to the service, there will be a public viewing on Thursday, November 20, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., allowing friends and family to pay their respects.

Whitley was reportedly leaving her job at a local blood donation center when the fatal shooting occurred. Authorities confirmed that Hudson, 23, was pursued by law enforcement after they identified him as a suspect. The pursuit ended in tragedy when Hudson crashed his vehicle and subsequently took his life.

In a statement, Whitley’s mother expressed profound gratitude for the support from family and the community during this challenging time. “My daughter had a heart as vibrant as a rainbow and a smile that could brighten any room,” she stated, emphasizing the love and strength surrounding her family.

Elajia’s aunt, Rhoda Alexander, highlighted the depth of her character and the harsh realities faced by victims of domestic violence. “Elajia was surrounded by love, yet the person who took her life failed to see that,” Alexander said. She also noted Whitley’s ambitions, mentioning her two jobs and her pursuit of a career as a surgical technician. Whitley had even obtained a phlebotomy certificate and had plans for her future.

Despite the family’s awareness of the troubled relationship, which included protective orders against Hudson, they feel helpless in the face of such violent acts. “If someone is determined to harm another person, it’s incredibly difficult to prevent that,” Alexander noted.

Whitley’s family is using this tragedy as a call to action, urging others in similar situations to speak out. “Let your loved ones know what you’re going through,” Alexander encouraged. “The more people who are aware, the more support you can gather.”

In the wake of the tragedy, BioLife, where Whitley worked, expressed deep sorrow over her untimely death. “We are profoundly saddened by the loss of our colleague and extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew her,” the company stated.

Elajia Whitley’s family remains committed to honoring her memory and sharing her story, hoping it serves as a message to anyone facing domestic violence. “We will continue to celebrate her life. We love you, Elajia, and we will see you again,” Alexander vowed, emphasizing the enduring impact of Whitley’s spirit on those who knew her.
