Khatima, India — Tensions escalated in Khatima on Saturday following the death of a 24-year-old man who was fatally injured in a knife attack late Friday night. The incident sparked violent protests at the local bus station, prompting law enforcement to intervene with force to restore order.
Authorities reported that Tushar Sharma, a resident of Ashram Paddhati, was assaulted around 9:30 p.m. on Friday by a group of over a dozen individuals from the nearby Gotiya Islamnagar area. After suffering severe wounds, he was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. Two of Sharma’s friends, Salman from Pakariya and Abhay from Valmiki Basti, also sustained critical injuries and are presently receiving treatment.
News of Sharma’s death ignited outrage among local Hindu organizations, resulting in large gatherings at the bus station. Protesters forcefully closed shops believed to be owned by non-Hindus, leading to instances of vandalism and arson, including the torching of a tea stall linked to the father of one of the suspects.
In response to the growing unrest, senior police officials deployed a heavy presence to the area and utilized lathicharges to disperse angry crowds. Firefighters were also summoned to combat the flames, as law enforcement aimed to prevent further violence. Local authorities have imposed restrictions in the area to maintain peace.
A police manhunt is currently underway, with officers examining CCTV footage to identify additional suspects involved in the attack. So far, two individuals, identified as Hashim and Sameer, have been detained. Khatima circle officer Vimal Rawat emphasized that officials are committed to swiftly apprehending the remaining individuals responsible for the incident and will take strict action against anyone attempting to disrupt public order.
The state’s Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, who visited Khatima just a day prior, has instructed police leadership to expedite the arrest of those involved in the attack. According to police, Sharma had been married for approximately a year and a half and worked for a local transportation company. They have classified the incident as a result of an ongoing rivalry between two factions rather than a communal conflict.
As investigations continue, the community grapples with the aftermath of these violent events, raising concerns about safety and unity in the area. Police are urging residents to remain calm and avoid spreading misinformation, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining law and order.
