Tragic House Party Shooting Claims Life of College Student as Long Island Teen Arrested for Murder

Hempstead, N.Y. — An 18-year-old man from Long Island has been charged with murder following a shooting at a house party that resulted in the death of a college student from the Bronx. Police announced the arrest of Jacob McMillan, who faces multiple charges, including attempted murder and weapon possession, stemming from a separate incident earlier this year.

According to Nassau County police, the shooting occurred on November 22 shortly before 11 p.m. at the intersection of Willow and Kennedy avenues after officers were alerted by a ShotSpotter notification. Authorities reported that Amira McCleod, 19, who was attending the party, was killed after she tried to flee from the gunfire.

Investigators revealed that McMillan arrived at the gathering with friends and became involved in a heated exchange with the host. Concerned about potential weapons, the host attempted to prevent anyone from bringing firearms into the home. After backing away from the crowd, McMillan allegedly opened fire, hitting three individuals, one of whom was McCleod.

McCleod, a sophomore at Monroe College, was active in the women’s basketball program and had aspirations of starting her own clothing and sneaker store. Her death shocked the community, prompting an outpouring of grief. Monroe College released a statement expressing sadness and offering condolences to McCleod’s family and friends, calling her a cherished member of the university community.

A spokesperson for the college emphasized the profound impact of the loss, stating that McCleod had a promising future ahead. As students mourn her passing, discussions on campus are turning toward the broader implications of gun violence and the need for community safety.

McMillan, who is also implicated in a burglary case from September, is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment on Wednesday, where he will face the serious charges against him. The incident has drawn attention to ongoing concerns regarding youth violence and public safety, particularly in areas where college students gather.

As investigations continue, officials urge the community to come together in support of the victims and to advocate for solutions that prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
