York, PA — A tragic confrontation at UPMC Memorial Hospital escalated when a distressed husband, reeling from his wife’s terminal illness prognosis, opened fire in the intensive care unit, resulting in the death of a police officer and injuries to five others. The incident unfolded on Saturday when Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, 49, targeted the ICU staff, taking several hostage.
Hours before the onslaught, Archangel-Ortiz, fraught with sorrow over his wife’s condition, had been escorted out of the hospital by security after a contentious outburst. Authorities say his act of violence was fueled by his belief that the medical team could have done more to save his wife, who remains in a critical state.
On the day of the attack, Archangel-Ortiz arrived at the hospital armed with a gun, zip ties, and duct tape concealed in a backpack. He barricaded himself in the ICU, holding staff at gunpoint. The situation quickly escalated, leading to a gunfight with law enforcement officers who responded to the emergency call.
During the exchange, three officers were shot, among them West York Borough Police Department Officer Andrew Duarte, 30, who succumbed to a fatal shot to the torso. The York County Coroner’s Office later declared Duarte’s death a homicide, sparking a wave of mourning across the community. Duarte’s life will be commemorated at a service scheduled for Friday at Living Word Community Church in Red Lion, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his girlfriend, parents, and numerous relatives.
The hospital reported that an ICU doctor, nurse, and custodian were also wounded by gunfire during the incident, while another employee sustained injuries from a fall. By Sunday, the hospital confirmed all were in stable condition and progressing well in their recovery. In a fortunate turn of events, no patients were harmed during the ordeal.
As the community reels from the violence, the Pennsylvania State Police, in collaboration with the York County District Attorney’s Office, have spearheaded an in-depth investigation into the tragic circumstances. Details of the probe remain tightly guarded, with updates anticipated upon its conclusion.
This incident underscores the emotional and psychological toll on families dealing with terminal illnesses, highlighting the importance of support and mental health resources in healthcare settings to prevent such crises. This heartbreaking event not only leaves a community in mourning but also prompts a closer look at hospital security measures and the pressures facing medical staff and law enforcement in crisis situations.
