Houston, Texas — A tragic accident occurred Sunday night when a private helicopter collided with a radio tower in Houston, resulting in the deaths of multiple individuals, including a child. The crash, which took place near Engelke Street and North Ennis Street before 8 p.m., set off a large fireball and drew immediate response from local emergency services.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire and Police Chief J. Noe Diaz confirmed that four passengers were aboard the helicopter, an R44 aircraft, when it struck the tower. Although officials have yet to release the identities of those killed, they confirmed the gravity of the event with multiple fatalities reported.
During a press conference, Whitmire described the scene as “terrible,” noting that the aircraft was completely destroyed. He reassured the public that no injuries occurred on the ground and that the nearby residents and buildings remained unscathed.
“The residents are secure and safe, but the accident scene is horrendous. We have multiple fatalities and a helicopter destroyed,” Whitmire stated. He further mentioned that the helicopter had taken off from Ellington Airport, although its intended destination at the time of the crash remains unclear.
Police Chief Diaz touched upon the fortunate absence of further disaster, citing the proximity of a butane gas tank near the crash site, which could have compounded the tragedy. The neighborhood experienced some disruptions with reported power outages due to the incident.
Expressing his concerns and requesting community support, Whitmire said, “We need to keep the family of the victims in our prayers and be thankful for our city’s solidarity during such tragic times.”
Authorities including the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board, alongside local police and fire departments, are meticulously investigating the cause of the crash. Mayor Whitmire indicated that the investigation could take several days to complete, aiming to provide clarity and prevent future accidents.
The community remains in shock as they mourn the loss and confront the impact of this calamity, rallying around the affected families and hoping for swift and clear answers from the ongoing investigation. As the city looks to recover, the strength and unity of Houston’s residents are vividly on display in this difficult time.
