Tragic Family Crisis in Kerala: Man Surrenders After Allegedly Killing Five, Cites Overwhelming Debts

Venjaramoodu, India – In a shocking series of events that has rattled this suburb of Thiruvananthapuram, a 23-year-old man, identified only as Afan, was arrested after he confessed to the brutal killings of five individuals, including close family members and his girlfriend. Severely impacted by financial distress, Afan purportedly carried out the murders on February 24, casting a somber shadow over this tightly-knit community.

Authorities revealed that Afan surrendered to the Venjaramoodu police station this past Monday, following the grim acts. After his surrender, he attempted to end his life by ingesting poison. He was subsequently hospitalized on Friday; his condition has since stabilized, enabling police to take him into custody and commence formal interrogation.

During the investigation, police indicated that Afan was driven by dire financial straits, having accumulated a debt nearing ₹65 lakh ($79,000) from multiple creditors. Initial reports suggest the young man had planned a suicide pact involving himself, his mother, and his brother but instead proceeded to carry out the killings alone.

The victims included Afan’s 88-year-old grandmother, his 13-year-old brother, his girlfriend, his paternal uncle, and his uncle’s wife. The series of murders spanned across three locations falling under the jurisdictions of Venjaramoodu and Pangode police stations.

The Thiruvananthapuram rural district police chief, Sudarsan K S, commented on the case, outlining the accused’s financial turmoil. “The family was experiencing financial difficulties,” he noted, adding that Afan had recently borrowed ₹40,000 from a financial institution which added to his escalating debts. He highlighted that while the accused provided a statement regarding a family suicide plan, the truth of this claim remains uncertain.

Recovery is also ongoing for Afan’s mother, who survived an attack and is currently being treated in a hospital. Although she is capable of speaking, she reportedly experiences difficulties in recollecting the events leading up to the attacks.

Contradicting the police’s narrative concerning the motive, Afan’s father strongly dismissed the notion of substantial financial liabilities. Having just returned from abroad, he stated to reporters, “We did not have any big financial liabilities. It was not an issue in our family.” He stressed his unawareness of the circumstances that led to the tragic incidents, emphasizing the investigative responsibility of the police.

As of now, Afan has been officially arrested and charged in connection with his grandmother’s murder under the jurisdiction of the Pangode police station. Additional legal proceedings regarding the other murders are expected to follow.

Local authorities are continuing to investigate the multiple facets of this case, which has sent shockwaves through the community, as they try to piece together the sequence of events and underlying motives that led to these tragic February slayings. The investigation remains ongoing, with police custody ensuring Afan remains detained until further legal actions are determined, scheduled until March 13.
