TIRUNELVELI, India — The tragic death of a 30-year-old male elephant named Radhakrishnan has drawn attention to the challenges wildlife faces in rugged terrain. The animal perished from multiple skull fractures after a fall in the Upper Kothayar region of the Manjolai Hills, as confirmed by the Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (KMTR) administration on Thursday.
According to LS Srikanth, the deputy director and wildlife warden at KMTR, Radhakrishnan’s carcass was discovered lying head-down on a tar road near a steep roadside cut that measured 20 feet deep. Evidence from the postmortem examination indicated that the elephant had slipped off a large rock, leading to its fateful fall of approximately 15 feet onto the roadway.
The site of the incident featured a gentle eight-meter slope that culminated in a sizable boulder, with a movable stone precariously positioned at the edge. Footprints at the scene suggested that Radhakrishnan lost his footing after stepping onto the rocky surface—a misstep that turned fatal when he stepped on the loose stone and fell.
The postmortem report detailed how the fall inflicted severe trauma, including extensive internal bleeding, resulting in a tragic yet instantaneous death. Srikanth noted the absence of struggle marks, indicating that the elephant likely did not experience prolonged suffering.
This unfortunate event underscores the dangers wildlife encounters, especially in habitats characterized by precarious geological features.
