Casablanca, Morocco – Seven individuals tragically lost their lives following an explosion on a commercial vessel near Morocco’s Atlantic coast. The incident occurred on Thursday, May 30, when the Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier Toro Rosso experienced an explosion and subsequent fire in its engine room while anchored eight nautical miles from the Port of Jorf Lasfar.
Search and rescue teams rushed to the scene and were able to recover three bodies initially. Additionally, they evacuated over a dozen injured crew members from the vessel. Unfortunately, four of the injured crew members later succumbed to their injuries in the hospital, bringing the total death toll to seven.
At the time of the incident, Toro Rosso was waiting to dock at the port to load phosphate fertilizer. Most of the vessel’s 28 crew members were Syrian nationals. Nine crew members remained in the hospital for treatment, while the others who escaped injury were under the care of port officials.
