FREMONT, Neb. — A tragic explosion at the Horizon Biofuels plant claimed three lives, including a father and his two young daughters, as rescue efforts continued into Wednesday. The incident, which occurred just before noon on Tuesday, prompted a swift response from local emergency teams and state officials.
The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Wednesday that 32-year-old Dylan Danielson of Columbus was among the deceased. Search and recovery teams, including Nebraska Task Force One, located his body around noon. While the two juveniles who perished alongside him have also been recovered, their identities have not been disclosed to protect the family’s privacy.
Mayor Joey Spellerberg of Fremont shared during a news conference that Danielson and his daughters were present at the facility, reportedly accompanying him to work ahead of a scheduled doctor’s appointment. Emergency responders faced significant challenges due to the collapsed structure and an ongoing fire, leading to a meticulous recovery process that involved heavy machinery.
Investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office, along with local law enforcement, are focusing on the explosion’s cause. Road closures in the area are expected to remain in effect as authorities work to gather evidence and ensure safety.
Horizon Biofuels operates as Elkhorn Valley Animal Bedding, specializing in the production of wood pellets and animal bedding made from waste materials. The plant employs around ten people and contributes to the local economy with an annual production capacity of 20,000 short tons.
In a statement, the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office extended condolences to the victims’ family, emphasizing the need for privacy during this difficult time. As the investigation continues, the community is left grappling with the impact of this devastating event.
