Sauk Rapids, Minnesota — A tragic incident involving two former teachers has left a community in mourning following a reported murder-suicide. Authorities state that 32-year-old Crystal Marschel was fatally shot by her boyfriend, 34-year-old John Gans, who then took his own life on July 18.
According to the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived at the residence after a request for a welfare check. Marschel, who was due in court for a driving offense that day, had not shown up, prompting concerns from those close to her. Gans, who was navigating a divorce, was also expected to appear in court on the same day.
Upon arrival, law enforcement found both individuals dead at the scene, along with a .40 caliber handgun. The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Marschel suffered a gunshot wound to the head, while Gans’ death was classified as a suicide.
Local educators remember Gans and Marschel as dedicated professionals. Gans had been teaching math at a middle school from 2013 until this year, while Marschel taught physical education at the same school since 2019. Their tragic end has resonated deeply within the educational community.
Marschel leaves behind two young children, ages three and five, along with their father. In response to the family’s sudden loss, loved ones have initiated a GoFundMe campaign to provide financial support for the children. The fundraiser portrays Marschel as a passionate, nurturing mother whose life revolved around her children and teaching.
Described as a “warm, vibrant soul” who “loved fiercely,” her family expressed devastation over the loss, emphasizing the void her passing has created for those who knew her. “We are heartbroken to share the devastating loss of Crystal, a loving young mother whose life was tragically cut short due to domestic violence,” reads the GoFundMe post.
Marschel’s dedication to teaching was deeply felt by her students, and her favorite affirmation as an educator was “good job.” Her family emphasized that her inspirational spirit and love will endure, even after her untimely death.
