Chicago, IL — A festive gathering turned tragic on Monday when three men were killed, and five others injured after a birthday party in Chicago’s Little Village escalated into a mass shooting. The incident occurred in a basement apartment in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood, where the attendees had relocated to “continue the party” after leaving a local club.
Police responded to the emergency call at approximately 2:10 p.m. at a residence on the 3500 block of West 59th Street. According to Chicago Police Chief of Patrol Jon Hein, an altercation in the basement hallway preceded the gunfire. The victims, a mix of four men and four women ranging from 20 to 35 years old, found themselves caught in a deadly situation.
Investigators disclosed that two men were discovered fatally shot towards the back of the basement, while a third, aged 26, succumbed to his injuries at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Details regarding the identities of the deceased have yet to be released.
Among the injured, a 27-year-old woman is in critical condition after being shot in the head. She is currently receiving care at Mount Sinai Hospital. A 24-year-old woman, shot six times, was admitted to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition. Additionally, a 31-year-old man with an abdominal gunshot wound and a 21-year-old woman shot in her groin self-transported to the University of Illinois Hospital. They, along with a 25-year-old man who suffered a thigh injury, are reported to be in good condition.
Authorities found multiple shell casings scattered across the basement floor, but as of now, the suspects remain at large. A witness mentioned that the shooters may have attempted to escape in a green Subaru, which was later found abandoned. The vehicle was towed for forensic examination.
Local resident El Towers reported hearing at least ten gunshots, followed by the sound of people frantically exiting the residence. “Parties are often hosted here, but nothing like this has ever happened before,” Towers commented.
The neighborhood, usually bustling with children and everyday activities, became a scene of crime investigation as police cordoned off the area. The chilling sight of police tape and ongoing detective work captured the attention of local schoolchildren and residents alike. One longtime resident expressed her shock, noting the abnormality of such violence on her usually quiet block.
In response to the violence, Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed his sorrow and condemned the shootings in a statement on social media. “We as a city are praying and grieving for all the victims, survivors, and their families,” Johnson said. “There is no place in our city for senseless acts of violence.”
