Tragic Double Homicide: Community Shaken as Rainier Beach Shooting Claims Lives of Two Teens

SEATTLE — A tragic shooting near Rainier Beach High School has claimed the life of a 17-year-old student, identified as Traveiah Houfmuse, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The King County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed his death. A second victim has yet to be publicly identified, and the search for the assailant continues.

The incident unfolded Friday afternoon, shortly after school had let out, at the intersection of Rainier Avenue South and South Henderson Street. Witnesses described a scene filled with chaos and emotion as police responded to the unfolding violence. Seattle Police Assistant Chief Tyrone Davis characterized the aftermath as particularly distressing, noting that officers had to restrain onlookers. Reports indicate that one officer sustained minor injuries but remained conscious.

The two teenagers were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have classified the shooting as a double homicide, raising concerns within the community about safety. Following the incident, the suspect fled on foot, prompting a thorough search by police, which included assistance from the King County Sheriff’s Office helicopter and specialized K-9 units. Despite their efforts, no arrest has been made.

Davis emphasized the importance of community input in bringing the shooter to justice. “We truly believe that people saw what happened here,” he said, urging anyone with information to come forward. The Seattle Police Department encourages the public to contact their Violent Crimes Tip Line, with anonymous tips being accepted.

Investigators believe the shooting may have been targeted, but until more details emerge, they continue to piece together the events that led to the tragedy. The department has established a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.

This incident reflects ongoing challenges in urban areas regarding youth violence and community safety. “We spend a lot of time working with members of the community to figure out how we can keep people safe,” Davis remarked, highlighting the department’s commitment to working collaboratively with residents. He underscored that such incidents do not define the neighborhood, adding that it’s heartbreaking to witness violence affect families and friends.

As the investigation continues, the community awaits further developments in the case, hoping that justice can be served for the victims and their loved ones.
