FARMINGVILLE, N.Y. — A domestic dispute turned deadly last week when a man fatally assaulted his estranged wife before turning the knife on himself, leaving a teenager injured in the violence.
Authorities say 57-year-old Marcos Leal stabbed his 46-year-old wife, Adriana Barbosa, during the incident at their Farmingville home shortly after 8:15 p.m. Thursday. Leal then reportedly attempted to take his own life. He survived the attempt and was later hospitalized.
Police responded to a 911 call about a domestic situation escalating at the residence on Granny Road. Upon arrival, officers were confronted with a harrowing scene, with Barbosa and Leal both suffering from stab wounds. The teenager, whose relationship to the couple has not been specified, was also found injured.
Barbosa was quickly taken to Stony Brook University Hospital; however, she could not be saved and was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival. The teenager was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is recovering.
As for Leal, he was also transported to the same hospital with serious wounds resulting from his suicide attempt. He faces charges including murder, criminal contempt, and endangering the welfare of a child.
Details surrounding the incidents leading to this tragic confrontation remain unclear. Investigators are still working to uncover the events that led to the violence, as the inquiry continues.
Leal, now in the hospital recovering from his injuries, is expected to face arraignment in the coming days. The severe ramifications of this incident underscore the ongoing issues surrounding domestic violence and its devastating impact on families.
