Omaha, Neb. — A tragic collision involving two vehicles on Friday afternoon has left two minors dead and several others injured. The accident occurred around 12:45 p.m. on Pacific Street, near the Interstate 680 interchange.
According to Omaha police, a westbound 2017 blue Chevrolet Silverado collided with a black Toyota SUV heading east on Pacific Street, which was turning onto I-680. The impact sent the Toyota hurtling downhill until it struck a large pole. There were seven occupants in the Toyota at the time of the crash.
Emergency responders confirmed the deaths of an 18-year-old male and a 10-year-old female at the scene. Five other occupants from the Toyota were transported to local hospitals with significant injuries. A 6-year-old girl was reported to be in critical condition at Nebraska Medicine, while a 17-year-old girl and a 37-year-old woman were listed in serious condition at the same facility. A 12-year-old girl was taken to Children’s Hospital, and a 37-year-old man was transported to Bergan Mercy, both also in serious condition.
The Chevrolet driver, a 60-year-old man, sustained minor injuries but declined hospitalization.
Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances leading to the crash and have partially closed Pacific Street between 108th and 114th Streets to facilitate their efforts.
Residents in the area expressed shock over the incident, highlighting the dangerous nature of that intersection. Many are calling for increased safety measures to prevent future accidents.
