Tragic Casino Shooting in Reno Claims Three Lives; Suspected Gunman Dies in Custody

Reno, Nevada — A man suspected in a violent shooting that left three dead outside a prominent casino has died in a local hospital. Dakota Hawver, 26, succumbed to his injuries early Thursday, following an incident that shocked the community and resulted in chaos at the Grand Sierra Resort.

Police reported that Hawver had been in critical condition since the shooting occurred on Monday. His involvement in the deadly event has raised numerous questions, particularly concerning the motive behind the attack. So far, investigators have found no links between Hawver, the casino, or the victims.

The victims included two men, 33-year-olds Justin Aguila and Andrew Canepa, who were visiting from Southern California for a bachelor party. A local resident, 66-year-old Angel Martinez, also lost his life in the shooting. Authorities confirmed they were shot while waiting for a ride in the valet area, and Martinez was targeted while driving through the parking lot.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as the shooter fired approximately 80 rounds from a legally purchased 9mm handgun. Despite the weapon’s initial malfunction, Hawver managed to reload and continued firing as he fled through the parking lot. During his escape, he encountered an armed security guard from the casino, who returned fire. Eventually, Hawver was pursued and apprehended by responding police officers.

Among those injured were two others who sustained wounds during the melee but are expected to recover fully. Their condition underscores the seriousness of the attack, which has left the Reno community grappling with the aftermath and the loss of life.

Reno officials are working with investigators from the nearby town of Sparks, who are leading the inquiry into the shooting. In a statement, police emphasized that Hawver’s background yielded no prior criminal activity or documented mental health issues. The lack of a clear motive only heightens the tragedy of the situation.

The Grand Sierra Resort, known for its concerts and events, is located near the California border, making it a popular destination for tourists during the summer months. The incident has drawn significant attention to the venue, which has hosted various high-profile occasions, including political rallies.

As the investigation continues, the community remains in mourning, reflecting on the senseless violence that shattered an otherwise enjoyable evening. Local leaders are calling for unity as they navigate the repercussions of this tragic event.
