COLUMBIA, S.C. — An 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a shooting last week that left two people dead and another injured on the campus of South Carolina State University. Khamanti Lytrel Kennedy has been charged with murder, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. The shooting unfolded around 9 p.m. on Thursday at Hugine Suites, where three individuals were shot. One victim died at the scene, another succumbed to injuries at a hospital, and a third was treated for wounds and is expected to survive.
The victims have been identified as 19-year-old Henry L. Crittington from Orangeburg and 18-year-old Terrell Thomas from Norway. University officials confirmed that neither victim was a student at South Carolina State. The surviving individual is a current student.
Details from an arrest warrant reveal that Kennedy arrived on campus in a vehicle with three other people. Surveillance footage captured the group exiting the vehicle and entering the housing complex. Shortly thereafter, the shooting took place.
Investigators believe the motivation for the shooting may have stemmed from a drug-related transaction. The arrest warrant alleges that Kennedy was involved in a marijuana deal that escalated into violence. Surveillance images reportedly show him fleeing the scene shortly after gunfire erupted.
