Stockton, California — A child’s birthday celebration turned deadly Saturday evening when gunfire erupted at a banquet hall, resulting in the tragic deaths of four individuals, including two young children. The ages of the victims ranged from 8 to 21, a stark reminder of the senseless violence that has marred communities across the nation.
“I consider this one of the most heinous acts imaginable,” said San Joaquin County Sheriff Patrick Withrow during a news conference. “To so callously shoot at children at a birthday party is something we simply cannot tolerate.” Authorities reported that 11 additional partygoers were injured in the shooting, with at least one individual remaining in critical condition.
The incident unfolded just before 6 p.m. on the 1900 block of Lucile Avenue. Evidence collection at the scene continued as shell casings and firearms, some discovered on a nearby rooftop, were processed. Preliminary investigations suggest there may have been multiple shooters involved, though it’s still unclear if that includes anyone who may have attempted to return fire.
No arrests had been made as of Sunday evening, leading authorities to appeal to the public for any information that might assist the investigation. Sheriff Withrow noted that investigators aim to review surveillance footage from the area to better understand the sequence of events.
Heather Brent, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, indicated that this shooting may not have been an accidental occurrence, suggesting that the assailants could have been targeting specific individuals. Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi referred to the incident as potentially rooted in “group gang violence,” though Sheriff Withrow cautioned that the determination of gang involvement was still premature.
“It’s apparent this attack was not random,” Withrow stated. “They seemed to have entered the venue with someone in mind, which intensifies our resolve to bring those responsible to justice.” Witnesses reported that the shooting started within the banquet hall and subsequently spilled into the outdoors, with several vehicles suffering damage from gunfire.
Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, are collaborating in the ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, Stockton police have detained five individuals, including a juvenile, related to separate reports of armed groups in the vicinity, though connections to the banquet hall shooting remain undetermined.
Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee expressed his outrage, asserting that such violence has no place in the community. “Someone walked into a party to shoot children, and that’s beyond comprehension,” he said.
San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas pledged that his office would leverage all available resources to ensure accountability for those responsible. “This kind of violence is unacceptable in our community, especially when it affects children,” he declared.
