Tragic Betrayal: 24-Year-Old Neighbor Arrested for Murdering 75-Year-Old Woman in Shocking Theft Gone Wrong

Navi Mumbai, India — Authorities have arrested a 24-year-old neighbor in connection with the slaying of a 75-year-old woman, whose body was discovered at her farmhouse last week. The suspect, identified as Abhijit Mahesh Ambawale, allegedly killed the victim to steal her valuables in a desperate attempt to settle his debts.

Lilavati Rajaram Balkawade, a resident of Nate village in Mahad taluka, was found dead on November 28 after heading to the farmhouse alone for an errand. Reports indicate that Ambawale attacked Balkawade, suffocating her before making off with her gold jewelry and mobile phone.

The investigation was triggered when local residents reported suspicious activity in the vicinity, prompting the Mahad City police to file a case. Superintendent of Police Aanchal Dalal, along with additional Superintendent Abhijit Shivdhare and inspector Milind Khopade, spearheaded the inquiry. A specialized team from the Local Crime Branch was formed to expedite the probe.

Following their examination of the crime scene and interviews with neighbors, investigators identified Ambawale as a person of interest. Sources indicate that he was struggling financially and had accrued substantial debt from friends and family. After a thorough questioning, Ambawale confessed to the crime, admitting that he intended to seize Balkawade’s belongings to alleviate his financial burdens.

Just under two days after Bakawade’s murder, Ambawale was taken into police custody. Authorities have charged him under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, reflecting the serious nature of his alleged crime.

The tragic incident underscores growing concerns about safety and rising crime in suburban areas. Local officials and residents are grappling with increased anxiety following such violent acts, leading to calls for enhanced community vigilance. Investigators remain focused on gathering all evidence related to the case as they prepare for the upcoming legal proceedings.
