WAYNESBORO, Va. — A woman was killed in an aggravated assault at a home late Monday evening, prompting a police chase that extended into surrounding counties. Authorities have arrested a 57-year-old man in connection with the incident.
The victim, Laura V. Humphries, 46, was declared dead at the scene when officers arrived at the residence on 13th Street around 9:21 p.m. Officers from the Waynesboro Police Department initially responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at the location.
Upon arrival, the suspect, Gaines Randolph Thomas, fled in a white BMW SUV. Police attempted to pull him over, leading to a pursuit that crossed into neighboring Augusta and Nelson counties before ultimately being lost in Albemarle County due to dangerous driving conditions.
In the early hours of Tuesday, Thomas was taken into custody following a call reporting a suicidal subject armed with a knife. He was detained at approximately 8:15 a.m. on Old Whitehill Road.
The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office has charged Thomas with two felonies: second-degree murder and eluding law enforcement. Additional charges are anticipated as the investigation continues.
