TREMONTON, Utah — A tragic incident unfolded late Sunday night when two police officers were shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance. Another officer sustained injuries during the violent exchange.
At approximately 9:02 p.m., emergency dispatchers received a series of 911 hangup calls from a residence near 700 N. 200 E. Responding to the situation, an officer from the Tremonton Garland Police Department engaged with a resident who reported unsettling activity inside the home. In a sudden escalation, a male suspect emerged brandishing a firearm and began shooting, fatally wounding the first officer on the scene.
As the initial response unfolded, a second officer who arrived as backup was also targeted by gunfire from the suspect, resulting in his death. Meanwhile, a deputy from the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office, dispatched to assist, faced a barrage of gunfire that struck both him and his police service dog while they remained inside their vehicle.
The injured deputy and K9 were promptly transported to a local hospital and veterinary clinic. Fortunately, both are now in fair condition and undergoing treatment for their injuries.
Following the shooting, bystanders were able to persuade the suspect to surrender and drop his weapon. He was subsequently taken into custody without further incident as additional law enforcement units arrived on the scene. SWAT teams were deployed to ensure the residence was secure and that there were no remaining threats to the community.
The suspect now faces charges of aggravated murder and is being held at the Box Elder County Jail. The Weber County Attorney’s Office is overseeing the active homicide investigation, which aims to clarify the events leading up to the tragic incident.
Local officials expressed their condolences, highlighting the profound impact on the community and the families of the fallen officers. “These officers dedicated themselves to serving their community, and their sacrifice will not be forgotten,” a spokesperson said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with their families, the Tremonton Garland Police Department, and the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office during this difficult time.”
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this violence, authorities have pledged transparency and support as they move forward with the investigation and provide assistance to the families affected. Further updates are expected as additional details emerge in the days ahead.
