Bucksnort, Tennessee — A destructive explosion at an explosives manufacturing plant early Friday morning has left multiple people dead and more than a dozen unaccounted for. The blast at Accurate Energetic Systems, situated about 50 miles west of Nashville, occurred just before 8 a.m., prompting a significant emergency response.
Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis confirmed that several casualties have resulted from the incident but did not specify the exact number of fatalities. Reports indicate that at least 18 individuals remain missing, though initial figures had indicated 19. Emergency personnel are currently working to confirm the identities of those who were present at the facility during the explosion and are notifying family members of the affected individuals.
Emergency responders from multiple agencies have converged on the scene, with over 300 personnel dispatched to assist in recovery efforts. Authorities have cautioned the public to steer clear of the area while investigations are underway. Sheriff Davis stated that this incident will not be resolved quickly, suggesting the recovery efforts could extend over several days.
Witnesses close to the plant described the powerful blast, which shook their homes. Local resident Gentry Stover recounted being jolted from sleep, fearing his house had collapsed. “I realized about 30 seconds after I woke up that it had to have been that,” he said, reflecting on the intensity of the explosion.
State officials are also expressing concern regarding the economic ramifications of the explosion, given that Accurate Energetic Systems is a significant employer in the region. State Representative Jody Barrett, who represents the nearby town of Dickson, indicated that residents heard the explosion, likening the sound to something crashing through the roof of their home.
According to the company’s website, Accurate Energetic Systems specializes in the development and production of energetic products for both defense and commercial applications. Their clients reportedly include government agencies involved in national security.
Investigators continue to assess the scene, while community members await updates on loved ones and the overall impact of the incident. The investigation and recovery operation are expected to proceed throughout the weekend as officials assess safety protocols at the site and determine the cause of the explosion.
