Stockton, California – A shooting at a children’s birthday celebration in Stockton left three young children and one adult dead Saturday evening, with authorities continuing to search for answers and suspects. The incident occurred just before 6 p.m. PST at a banquet hall on Lucile Avenue, a neighborhood known for its diverse community within the city of 322,000.
In total, 15 people were shot during the violent episode, with the deceased identified only by their ages: an 8-year-old, a 9-year-old, a 14-year-old, and a 21-year-old. Reports indicated that at least one of the surviving victims is in critical condition. Local officials emphasized their commitment to resolving the case as they gathered evidence and sought out witness accounts.
“We’ve had our investigators on the scene for more than 21 hours, actively working to gather leads and video footage from anyone who may have witnessed the incident,” said San Joaquin County Sheriff Patrick Withrow during a Sunday press conference. “We will locate those responsible and ensure they face justice.”
Initial investigations indicate that multiple shooters may have infiltrated the celebration and opened fire. Sheriff Withrow noted that the shooting began inside the venue and continued outside, complicating the investigation as authorities look into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
No arrests have been made thus far. Mayor Christina Fugazi suggested that the shooting might be gang-related, but Sheriff Withrow cautioned against jumping to conclusions. “While the mayor’s comments were well intentioned, they may have been premature. We are still piecing together the timeline and motives behind the shooting,” he said. “We are confident this was not random; it seems they were targeting someone specific.”
In response to the ongoing investigation, Crime Stoppers is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to arrests in the case. Mayor Fugazi, demonstrating her commitment to community safety, pledged an additional $10,000, and Councilwoman Mariela Ponce contributed $5,000, raising the total reward to $25,000.
Fugazi issued a firm warning to anyone who might be harboring suspects. “If you protect them in any way, you put yourself at risk of severe consequences,” she stated, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. “Anyone who shields these individuals must understand that they’ll be treated as accomplices.”
This tragic incident contributes to a larger, troubling national narrative regarding gun violence, as The Gun Violence Archive reported 380 mass shootings this year alone, incidents where four or more people were shot. As authorities and the community grapple with this devastating event, the need for dialogue and action concerning gun violence has never been more pressing.
