San Antonio, Texas, is grappling with the aftermath of devastating flash floods that have resulted in at least five fatalities and left two individuals missing. The deluge, which occurred on Thursday, June 12, swept numerous vehicles off the roads, prompting widespread rescue efforts from local authorities.

Authorities reported that between the early morning hours and late afternoon, emergency services received over 70 calls related to water rescues and 16 additional requests for high water investigations. Many calls originated from individuals stranded on an access road near Loop 410, severely impacted by sudden and rapid water rise.

The San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD) confirmed that as many as 15 vehicles were believed to have been carried away into a nearby creek. Tragically, some victims were located dead inside their cars. Fire officials worked tirelessly to reach those trapped, with some being rescued from trees and bushes after being swept downstream.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus characterized the situation as “very, very tragic,” emphasizing the challenges faced by first responders. He noted that while most of the rescue operations involved helping people from vehicles stalled in deep water, several rescues demanded intense efforts amid fast-moving currents.

The National Weather Service had issued flood warnings as heavy rains showered the city, with reports indicating that five to eight inches fell in a short span on the city’s north side. Residents were urged to exercise caution, as numerous roads remained closed due to flooding, and more storms were anticipated.

Angela Richards, who was frantically searching for her husband, shared her traumatic experience. The last communication she received from him occurred while he was en route to work, shortly before water engulfed his vehicle. Her heartbreaking account underscores the urgency of the situation as families await news of loved ones.

As rescue efforts continue, officials remain vigilant, monitoring weather conditions and the potential for further flooding. The community is rallying together, offering support and resources to those impacted by this tragic event.
