RENO, Nev. — A shooting outside the Grand Sierra Resort has claimed the lives of three individuals and left two others injured, culminating in the death of the alleged gunman, Dakota Hawver. The 26-year-old Reno resident passed away in the early hours after being hospitalized in critical condition following his arrest.
Law enforcement identified two of the deceased victims as visitors from Southern California who were in town for a bachelor party. The third victim, a 66-year-old local man, was fatally shot while driving through the resort’s parking lot. The investigation, spearheaded by the Sparks Police Department, has yet to uncover any links between Hawver, the victims, or the casino itself. Officials continue to seek clarity on the motives behind the tragic incident.
Witness reports suggest that the chaotic scene unfolded around 4 a.m. Monday when Hawver approached a group of people in the valet area, brandishing a 9mm handgun that he had purchased legally two years prior. Initial attempts to discharge the weapon failed, but he quickly overcame the malfunction and began firing indiscriminately, striking his victims from behind.
The two men, Justin Aguila and Andrew Canepa, both aged 33, were shot while awaiting transportation. The third victim, Angel Martinez, was targeted as he navigated the parking lot. Hawver reportedly fired approximately 80 rounds during the encounter. Fortunately, two other individuals who sustained wounds during the shooting are expected to make a complete recovery.
As the gunman fled the scene, he confronted an armed security guard, triggering a return of gunfire before police arrived. Officers apprehended Hawver following an exchange of shots. Authorities have indicated that Hawver had no prior criminal record, nor was there any indication of mental health issues.
The Grand Sierra Resort, a well-known venue in Reno, has drawn various events, including concerts and political rallies. Situated close to Lake Tahoe, the area is a popular destination for tourists, especially during the summer.
The community remains in shock as investigations continue. Local officials are urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
