Southport, England — A teenage boy wielding a knife was arrested under suspicion of murder in Southport, a coastal town in North West England, after a brutal attack that left two children dead and several other individuals, including adults, critically wounded. The violent incident occurred at a community center amid a children’s event, coinciding with the first day of summer vacation.
Chief Constable Serena Kennedy of the Merseyside Police disclosed during a press conference that among the victims, nine children suffered injuries, with six in critical condition at local hospitals. Two adults, who reportedly intervened in an attempt to shield the children, were also stabbed and are critically wounded.
Authorities confirmed the apprehension of a 17-year-old suspect from the nearby village of Banks on accusations of murder and attempted murder. A knife was recovered at the scene. The police indicated that the youngster originally hailed from Cardiff and emphasized that the attack is not being treated as terror-related, noting they are not seeking any additional suspects.
The tragedy unfolded at a small community center located down an alleyway on Hart Street, surrounded by residential two-story brick buildings and scattered shops. The children were partaking in a Taylor Swift-themed yoga and dance class when the assailant entered and began his assault. Kennedy mentioned that the adults injured were likely harmed while attempting to protect the children.
Expressing her personal devastation and extending condolences on behalf of the force, Kennedy shared her deep empathy for the victims’ families. “As a mum of two daughters and the nanna of a five-year-old granddaughter, I cannot begin to imagine the pain and suffering the families of the victims are currently going through,” she stated.
The assault took place shortly before noon, triggering a swift emergency response. The North West Ambulance Service deployed 13 ambulances and a helicopter. Eleven individuals were treated on-site before being transported to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Aintree University Hospital, and Southport and Formby Hospital.
Local reporter Tim Johnson described a harrowing scene to a broadcaster, recounting his sighting of a bloodied girl on a stretcher with her parents in frantic pursuit. The community’s disbelief and grief were palpable as parents wailed and screamed in the streets, echoing fear and confusion.
