Tragedy Strikes North Windham: Motorcycle Rider Shot on Route 302, Suspect Detained After Search

NORTH WINDHAM, Maine — A man was fatally shot Friday afternoon on Route 302, prompting a swift response from law enforcement and a temporary shelter-in-place order in the area. The suspect was later located, although officials have not confirmed the individual’s status or released the names of those involved.

Windham Police Chief Kevin Schofield reported that multiple 911 calls flooded in around 1:55 p.m. regarding the shooting at the intersection of Route 302 and Landing Road. Bystanders attempted to assist the victim, who was riding a motorcycle at the time of the attack but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Witness Julia Hebert described the confrontation, indicating that the shooter was in a vehicle that sped away from the scene. “I’m still processing it all. It was a pretty traumatic experience, and my heart goes out to the victim’s family and anyone else affected,” she said.

The scene drew immediate attention from both local and state law enforcement. Authorities established a command post and restricted access to the area, with a helicopter and drones deployed to aid in the search for the suspect. Shortly after 2:20 p.m., officials announced a closure of Route 302 at the intersection, which remained in effect until just before 6:30 p.m.

In response to escalating concerns, Windham police and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office issued a shelter-in-place order around 4 p.m. for residents along Route 302 from Whites Bridge Road to Route 85 in Raymond, including surrounding side streets. An alert was sent statewide urging the public to stay indoors and report any suspicious activities to 911.

Maine State Police Major Lucas Hare clarified that the statewide alert was triggered inadvertently. Sheriff Kevin Joyce later confirmed that a deputy located the suspect’s vehicle parked at a Dunkin’ establishment along Route 302 in Raymond, thanks to tips from several witnesses. A mobile command center was promptly set up nearby to coordinate further operations.

Shortly after the vehicle was found, authorities located the suspect, lifting the shelter-in-place order shortly after 7 p.m. Police assured the public that there was no longer an ongoing threat. The investigation continues as officials gather details surrounding the incident and the circumstances leading to the tragic shooting.
