Tragedy Strikes Mississippi as Multiple Shootings Linked to Football Events Leave Several Dead and Injured

JACKSON, Miss. — A series of tragic shootings connected to football events across the state has left a grim toll, with several individuals injured and multiple fatalities reported. The violence erupted during a weekend of high school football, casting a shadow over community celebrations.

The first incident occurred in Leland, where a mass shooting unfolded outside a local venue after the homecoming game. Six people lost their lives among the 16 who were shot, with four victims pronounced dead at the scene and two others succumbing to their injuries shortly after in the hospital. The Washington County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Oreshama Johnson, 41; Calvin Plant, 19; Shelbyona Powell, 25; Kaslyn Johnson, 18; Amos Brantley Jr., 18; and JaMichael Jones, 34. Coroner LaQuesha Watkins urged the community to be patient as officials continue to investigate the case and expressed condolences to the grieving families.

“Leland is a close-knit community, and our hearts are heavy with the loss of life,” said Watkins in a statement. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has stepped in to assist local authorities in gathering crucial evidence and information.

In Rolling Fork, gunfire erupted at South Delta High School during the fourth quarter of another game. Sheriff Herbert Ceaser Sr. confirmed that Quindale Wise, a member of the community, was found shot twice and was later hospitalized in stable condition. Law enforcement officials were alerted that the suspected shooter was fleeing in a gray Honda. Officers subsequently apprehended two suspects, Justin Pam and Michael Miles Jr., who are now in custody.

A separate incident at Heidelberg High School escalated the terrifying weekend, claiming the lives of two individuals, including an expectant mother. Victims were discovered near the baseball field and a tailgating area, prompting immediate response from multiple agencies, including the Mississippi Highway Patrol and local police. Authorities have taken a person of interest, identified as Tylar Jarod Goodloe, into custody after tips from citizens led to his apprehension in Jasper County.

Governor Tate Reeves extended his condolences to the families impacted by the shootings. “We stand in solidarity with the victims and their loved ones during this difficult time. Those who are responsible will face justice,” he stated.

As investigations continue and communities begin to heal, the recent outbreaks of violence have sparked conversations about safety measures at events and the need for support services for those affected. The public is urged to assist law enforcement by providing any information regarding the incidents, as each piece of evidence could be a vital part of the ongoing investigations.
