Miami Beach, Florida — A tragic accident in Biscayne Bay has claimed the lives of two young girls after their sailboat was struck by a barge during a youth sailing program. The collision occurred on Monday, resulting in the capsizing of the boat, which was carrying a counselor and five children.
Rescue teams responded quickly to the incident, which unfolded just before 11:30 a.m. Witnesses reported seeing the sailboat overturned, sending all on board into the water. Emergency responders worked to recover the victims, with all individuals eventually brought to a nearby hospital.
The two deceased girls were identified as ages 7 and 13. Meanwhile, two other girls, ages 8 and 11, remain in critical condition as of Tuesday afternoon, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. A 12-year-old and a 19-year-old counselor were also rescued but did not require medical attention.
Preliminary assessments indicated that everyone on the sailboat was wearing life jackets at the time of the accident.
