GRAY, Maine — A tragic sequence of shootings in Sabattus, Maine, led to the deaths of two individuals, including the perpetrator’s own mother, and left two others injured, authorities reported. The violent spree concluded with the shooter taking his own life on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident began when 29-year-old James Davis III, riding in a car driven by his mother, Christine Smith, 47, fatally shot her before the vehicle came to a halt. Exiting the car, Davis then indiscriminately opened fire on passing vehicles, resulting in the death of Katherine Williams, 53, and wounding Tyson Turner, 19, and David Wilson, 35.
Earlier in the day, Davis had exhibited erratic behavior at his father’s home, according to state police. He was reportedly armed with a .357 revolver, an AK-style rifle, and possibly additional firearms. Family members have suggested that Davis was undergoing a mental health crisis at the time, though it remains unclear if he had a diagnosed long-term mental health condition.
Christine Smith, who lived with Davis and was his primary caregiver, often managed to pacify him during previous episodes, police noted. Their day had started together in what appeared to be a routine manner before it tragically spiraled out of control.
Following the initial shooting of his mother, Davis targeted vehicles along the road with his rifle. Katherine Williams, who was alone in her car at the time, was struck and killed. She was unacquainted with Davis, making her death a random act of violence.
Katherine Williams, also known as Kay, served as the kitchen manager at two schools in Litchfield and was cherished for her ability to nurture relationships with both students and staff. Katherine Grondin, superintendent, expressed profound sorrow over Williams’ passing, highlighting her positive influence and enduring legacy within the school community.
The injured, Tyson Turner and David Wilson, were taken to Central Maine Medical Center, where they are expected to recover. Both victims were alone in their respective vehicles during the attacks.
The motives behind this devastating series of events continue to puzzle investigators, as Davis was not previously known to state police. The shootings have deeply shaken the local community, prompting an outpouring of grief and disbelief.
Authorities have scheduled autopsies for the three deceased individuals to further investigate the circumstances surrounding the shootings. Meanwhile, the local community mourns the loss of life and grapples with the randomness and cruelty of the violence inflicted. As the investigation continues, many are left wondering about the underlying issues that led to this tragic day in Sabattus.
