Louisville, Ky. — A tragic plane crash at Louisville’s international airport has resulted in at least seven fatalities and numerous injuries, with officials anticipating that the casualty count may rise. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the incident occurred around 5:15 p.m. as a UPS cargo plane was taking off, bound for Honolulu, Hawaii.
The MD-11 aircraft, which was carrying approximately 38,000 gallons of fuel for its long journey, experienced catastrophic failures shortly after liftoff, leading to a significant explosion and flames that spread to nearby facilities. Among the injured, at least two people are reported in critical condition, while an additional eight sustained non-life-threatening injuries. There are also reports of two individuals missing from a nearby auto shop.
Governor Andy Beshear expressed deep concern for those affected and emphasized that the numbers could be fluid as rescue operations continue. First responders from multiple agencies are conducting thorough searches in the vicinity to ensure all individuals are accounted for. Fire officials are going door-to-door in nearby areas to verify safety.
In the wake of the disaster, authorities established a one-mile shelter-in-place order around the airport and advised families seeking to reunite with loved ones to head to the Family Reunification Area at the LMPD Training Facility. Hospitals are currently not accepting visitors for family reunification, prioritizing medical care for those injured in the crash.
The airport, officially known as SDF, has temporarily suspended all screening operations and closed its airfield, affecting passengers scheduled to fly in or out over the coming days. UPS Worldport has halted operations, and employees have been instructed not to report for their shifts.
Officials confirmed that although no hazardous materials were on board the aircraft, there are concerns about hazardous substances from surrounding businesses impacted by the fire. The National Transportation Safety Board has taken control of the investigation into the crash, with UPS indicating it will serve as the primary source of information going forward.
As recovery efforts continue, the community awaits further updates on the situation and the condition of those injured.
