Tragedy Strikes Lafayette: Young Girl Dies from Debaillon Park Shooting as Charges Against Suspects Escalate to Second Degree Murder

LAFAYETTE, La. — A six-year-old girl has died following a shooting that occurred during a community vigil, prompting local authorities to upgrade the charges against four suspects to Second Degree Murder. The tragic incident unfolded at Debaillon Park as people gathered to honor Phillip Francis Jr., a victim of a prior shooting incident.

The police confirmed the child, identified as Ryliee Watson, succumbed to her injuries several days after the shooting on August 24. Initially reported in critical condition, her status fluctuated as her family and the community prayed for her recovery. The outpouring of support included a GoFundMe campaign to assist with her medical expenses.

In the wake of her death, the suspects—Daylon Andrus, Kimmy Ray Dauntain Jr., Ja’Andrea Kentrell Willis, and Rickey Chaney—are now facing more severe charges. Lafayette Police Sgt. Robin Green announced that the suspects, all apprehended shortly after the shooting, will have their initial attempted murder charges elevated in light of the child’s passing.

The chaos erupted during a memorial service meant to protest gun violence, a somber display that turned into tragedy. Friends and family organized the vigil for Francis, who was shot earlier at the WoodSpring Suites hotel. Authorities do not believe the two incidents are linked, yet the irony of violence occurring during a memorial for its victims underscores ongoing concerns about safety in the community.

The investigation has progressed swiftly since the night of the shooting. Following the initial incident at approximately 7:25 p.m., Andrus was apprehended on August 27, followed by Dauntain the next day. Chaney was the last of the four to be arrested, taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals in Lake Charles on September 4.

Community members have expressed their outrage and sorrow over the incident, reflecting broader concerns about gun violence that have plagued Lafayette and other areas. Local law enforcement is urging those with information about the case to come forward, highlighting the need for community involvement in addressing such tragic events.

As the investigation continues, police will keep the public informed through press releases. The emotional toll on the families involved and the broader implications for gun violence awareness cannot be overstated, particularly in light of a vigil aimed at remembrance and peace turning into a scene of grief and loss.
