Lexington, Kentucky — The Richmond Road Baptist Church reopened on July 20, a week after a horrific mass shooting claimed the lives of two family members of the church’s pastor. The harrowing incident occurred on July 13, leaving the congregation and community in shock and mourning.
Jerry Gumm II, the pastor’s son, contends he was unjustly arrested on the day of the shooting while attempting to locate his father, who sustained critical injuries in the attack. Gumm rushed to the church after hearing alarming news from a relative, only to find the scene unrecognizable. His stepmother, Beverly Gumm, 72, and stepsister, Christina Combs, 32, were killed, while both his father and Combs’ husband, Randy, suffered serious wounds.
According to Gumm, when he arrived at the church, he attempted to communicate with police officers, seeking information about his father’s condition. He claims that police described him as “belligerent” and documented in a citation that he reached for his weapon. Gumm firmly denies these allegations, asserting he only sought answers while backing away and raising his hands. “I was asking about my father’s condition the entire time,” he explained. Gumm has been charged with menacing and is set to appear in court on August 29.
The tragedy escalated as police confronted the shooter, identified as Guy House, who was ultimately killed by law enforcement. Earlier that day, House had also shot a Kentucky State Police trooper at Blue Grass Airport. Authorities described House’s intent to locate his former partner, who was not at the church; instead, he shot her mother and sister.
House’s background reveals disturbing behavior leading up to the shooting. He had faced domestic violence accusations from his ex-partner and expressed suicidal thoughts, which prompted her to seek an emergency protective order. This order, however, did not reach him, as he was reportedly out of contact with law enforcement despite a known address. His criminal history included recent violations of probation, with allegations of drug use.
The local community is grappling with the aftermath of the violence, while people who knew House have taken to social media to express their shock and sorrow, indicating he may have been overwhelmed by personal struggles. Known in local music circles as the rapper HonKy Kong, House had garnered a following, though his lyrics often reflected his troubled past.
As the community begins to heal, discussions about gun violence and mental health continue to resonate, accentuating the urgent need for measures to prevent future tragedies. The Richmond Road Baptist Church, once a sanctuary, now stands as a symbol of resilience amidst overwhelming loss.
