Tragedy Strikes Joliet: Woman and Young Son Found Dead in Home, Suspect in Custody After Disturbing Incident

JOLIET, Ill. — Authorities are investigating the tragic deaths of a woman and her young son found shot in their home early Sunday. A man believed to be the shooter is currently in custody, as police seek to piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The shooting occurred at a residence on Garnsey Avenue, where officers responded to emergency calls reporting gunfire shortly before 7 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered a 36-year-old woman and her 4-year-old son in the backyard, both with apparent gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical efforts, both were declared dead at the scene.

Police Chief William Evans confirmed that the suspect, a 29-year-old man, was apprehended at the scene with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his ankle. The injury is not life-threatening, and he has been transported to a hospital for treatment under police supervision. The suspect’s identity has not been released, and as of Sunday evening, no formal charges had been filed against him.

While details remain sparse, Evans indicated the suspect had a connection to the residence and suggested that there may have been a domestic relationship involved. “We are still trying to ascertain the full extent of the relationship between the parties involved,” he stated during a press briefing.

In addition to the deceased mother and son, an 8-year-old boy, described as having special needs, was located unharmed in a bedroom. He was taken to a nearby medical facility for evaluation. Authorities believe this child may have been a sibling to the victims.

Investigators recovered a firearm and several spent shell casings at the site, which are reported to match the weapon used in the shooting. Police are urging anyone with additional information or video footage of the area to come forward.

With the investigation still ongoing, the Joliet Police Department has established contact points for community members to report tips. Individuals wishing to remain anonymous have been encouraged to contact local crime stoppers.

As the community grapples with this shocking incident, officials emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing domestic violence issues and ensuring the safety of other vulnerable individuals.
