Tragedy Strikes in Zanzibar as Sea Turtle Meat Claims Lives and Sparks Warning

GALLE, Sri Lanka – A green sea turtle was spotted on the beach in Galle, Sri Lanka on November 11, 2023, showcasing the beauty of marine life in the region.

Authorities in Zanzibar, Tanzania, reported several fatalities and illnesses linked to the consumption of sea turtle meat on Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago. Eight children and an adult lost their lives, while 78 others were hospitalized after ingesting the risky delicacy. The fatal cases are believed to be a result of chelonitoxism, a form of food poisoning affecting those who consume sea turtle meat.

Dr. Haji Bakari, the Mkoani District medical officer, confirmed that laboratory tests established the victims’ consumption of sea turtle meat as the root cause of the tragedy. The adult who tragically passed on Friday was the parent of one of the deceased children, who had succumbed earlier to the toxic effects of the turtle meat consumed on a Tuesday.

Zanzibar’s population holds sea turtle meat in high regard as a delicacy, despite the associated risks. The disaster management team, under the leadership of Hamza Hassan Juma, has urged caution among residents, advising against the consumption of sea turtles to prevent further health crises. This is not the first instance of tragedy related to sea turtle consumption in the region, as seven individuals, including a young child, met a similar fate in November 2021 on Pemba Island.

Tragic incidents like these serve as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with consuming certain types of wildlife. Authorities in Zanzibar are working to raise awareness about the risks involved in consuming sea turtle meat, in hopes of preventing future casualties. The protection and preservation of endangered species like sea turtles are crucial to maintaining the delicate balance of marine ecosystems, underscoring the importance of conservation efforts in the region.
