Pembroke, New York — A tragic bus crash on the New York State Thruway claimed the lives of at least five people, including a child, and left dozens injured Friday afternoon. The tour bus, carrying 52 passengers, was en route from Niagara Falls to New York City when it overturned near Pembroke, about 30 miles east of Buffalo.
The accident occurred around 12:30 p.m., prompting a massive emergency response. State police described the scene as a mass casualty incident, with efforts ongoing to rescue those trapped and tend to the injured. Trooper James O’Callaghan indicated that the bus lost control, veered into the median, and ultimately ended up in a ditch after rolling over on its side.
More than two hours following the crash, first responders continued to extract victims from the wreckage. The bus was heavily damaged, and nearly all passengers reported some form of injury, with many suffering from cuts and bruises. Sixteen individuals were transported to Erie County Medical Center for treatment, including two who required surgery and two others admitted to the trauma unit, according to hospital officials.
Traffic delays were significant as westbound lanes gradually reopened later in the afternoon, while eastbound routes remained closed for the rest of the day. State Police advised motorists to avoid the area and detours were implemented at Exit 48A and Exit 49.
First responders included multiple agencies, with helicopter support dispatched to facilitate the urgent transfer of the most critically injured patients. Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz termed the event a serious mass casualty accident.
As authorities processed the situation, they reached out to the public for assistance, urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or captured footage to contact them. Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her condolences and concern over the incident, assuring the public that state resources were being coordinated to aid the victims.
