Carver, Massachusetts, was shaken by a tragic shooting that erupted during a child’s birthday party, leaving two men dead and two others hospitalized. The incident occurred on Saturday evening at the Saint John the Baptist Club, prompting a swift response from multiple law enforcement agencies.
Authorities received reports of gunfire around 7:21 p.m. and quickly arrived on the scene, where they found four victims. According to Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz, two of those victims were pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The deceased were identified as 27-year-old Benjamin Cowart, who died at the scene, and 20-year-old Jalen Pina, who succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
The remaining victims, ages 28 and 32, were taken to nearby hospitals and remain in critical condition. The severity of their injuries has raised concerns within the community.
Nicholas Meuse, 23, has been arrested and charged with murder in connection to the shooting. Cruz reported that officers apprehended Meuse a short distance from the club shortly after the shooting. He faces serious charges, including two counts of murder, armed assault with intent to murder, and several firearm-related offenses. His arraignment is scheduled in Wareham District Court.
The Carver Police Department noted that the shooting appeared to be a targeted attack, although details surrounding Meuse’s motive or connection to the victims remain unclear. Authorities have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat related to the incident.
In the immediate aftermath, Silva Street was closed as authorities continued their investigation. Carver Police Chief Marc Duphily expressed gratitude to the community for their support during this difficult time, emphasizing the swift action taken to apprehend the suspect. “Our thoughts remain with the victims and their families,” he wrote on social media.
One of the victims, Pina, was an aspiring rapper who had performed just a day before the fatal shooting. A GoFundMe campaign set up in his memory has raised over $14,000 to help with funeral expenses, reflecting the impact he had in his community.
The tragic events of Saturday night have cast a shadow over what should have been a celebration, leaving the community grappling with the loss and uncertainty following this violent outburst.
