OAKLAND, Calif. — A California parole agent was fatally shot on Thursday while on duty, prompting an outpouring of grief and solidarity from state officials and law enforcement. Governor Gavin Newsom confirmed that the victim was 40-year-old Joshua Lemont Byrd, who is survived by his wife and three children.
The incident occurred around 12:50 p.m. inside the Division of Adult Parole Operations office in Oakland. Following the shooting, Byrd was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter. Law enforcement officials have apprehended a suspect, whose identity has not yet been disclosed.
Byrd had a distinguished career within the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). He began his journey as a cadet in June 2014 and advanced to serve as a correctional sergeant at the California Medical Facility. In October 2024, he transitioned to the DAPO office in Oakland, where he continued to protect and serve the community.
“This is a heartbreaking loss,” Newsom said in a statement, reflecting on Byrd’s dedication and bravery. “We are keeping his family in our prayers, and we join the men and women of CDCR in mourning this tragedy.” Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the profound impact of Byrd’s service.
In a gesture of respect, flags at the State Capitol and the Capitol Swing Annex will be flown at half-staff in honor of Byrd. This tragic event marks the first law enforcement line-of-duty death for the CDCR since 2018, underscoring the risks faced by those in public service.
The shooting has raised concerns within the community and among law enforcement agencies about the safety of parole agents. Byrd’s loss is a stark reminder of the dangers inherent in their line of work, often requiring them to confront challenging situations daily.
As the investigation into the shooting continues, support for Byrd’s family and colleagues remains strong. Community members are rallying to remember Byrd’s courage and commitment to public safety, highlighting the sacrifices made by law enforcement personnel in the line of duty.
Authorities are continuing their investigation and are expected to provide further updates as more information becomes available. Meanwhile, the CDCR and local law enforcement agencies are focusing on providing assistance to Byrd’s grieving family.
