Casablanca, Morocco – An explosion on the bulk carrier Toro Rosso has tragically claimed the lives of seven crew members and left several others injured. Moroccan authorities are currently investigating this devastating incident that occurred as the vessel was approaching the Port of Jorf Lasfar to load phosphate fertilizers.
The 91,384 DWT bulker, chartered by an Ethiopian company, faced a catastrophic explosion and subsequent engine room fire on the morning of May 30, 2024, when it was situated 8 nautical miles offshore. Rescue efforts to assist the crew members faced significant challenges due to the intensity of the situation.
This Panama-registered bulk carrier, with a history dating back to the 1990s under various ownerships, underwent its last repair and maintenance in 2022. Despite previous detention for safety concerns, the vessel was in operation, carrying 28 crew members primarily from Syria.
Three bodies were recovered from the ship, and twelve severely burned and injured individuals were transported to shore by a pilot boat. Although rescue operations were supported by tugs and helicopters, unfortunately, four crew members lost their lives in the hospital, while at least nine others remain under medical care.
Jorf Lasfar, a key port for trading phosphate, fertilizers, and chemicals along Morocco’s Atlantic coast, emphasizes the importance of strict safety protocols following this tragic event.
