Brooklyn, NY — Tragedy struck a Bensonhurst neighborhood late Friday evening as four individuals, including two children, were discovered deceased in an apartment following what authorities suspect was a violent assault.
Upon arriving at the scene around 10:30 p.m., police found 56-year-old Fayzieva Mavlyuda dead with multiple stab wounds to her neck inside her residence on West 8th Street. Also found deceased were Maftuna Khakimova, 27, and her two young children, Kamila Shavkatova, 5, and Timur Shavkatov, 4.
Authorities have reported that a 24-year-old male relative of the victims was taken into custody in connection with the deaths. According to police sources, the suspect, identified as the children’s uncle, had been experiencing mental health issues.
Neighborhood residents expressed shock and grief over the incident. Kenneth Scott, a long-time resident, remarked on the close-knit nature of the community, emphasizing that such violence was unexpected in what he described as a supportive and tight-knit neighborhood.
Across the street, Juan Perez recalled being awakened by distressing sounds the night of the incident. “There were multiple men sobbing uncontrollably and a lot of other men trying to console them,” Perez noted, indicating his unawareness of the gravity of the situation at the time.
The incident has left the community in mourning, with neighbors and friends trying to comprehend the loss of a family in such a horrific manner. Local resident Perez, a father himself, expressed his deep sympathy, acknowledging the profound impact of the tragedy on the family and neighborhood.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the homicides and have not yet released further details about the motive or the mental health history of the suspect in custody. The local community, meanwhile, is coming together to support one another and to remember the lives lost in this devastating event.
As the investigation continues, residents are calling for increased attention to mental health resources in the community, hoping to prevent such tragedies in the future.
