Piedmont, Alabama — A tragic accident at Indian Mountain ATV Park has left two adults dead and seven children injured after two ATV vehicles collided on a trail Saturday afternoon.
The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office reported that the incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. local time. One of the victims died at the scene, while the other succumbed to injuries shortly after being airlifted to a nearby hospital. The identities of the deceased are believed to be a married couple, although they have not yet been publicly disclosed.
In total, the crash involved 11 individuals: nine people in one ATV and two in another. After the initial collision, the ATV with the larger group rolled over and came to rest against a tree about 150 feet away from the point of impact. Fortunately, the passengers in the second ATV were uninjured.
Emergency responders, including the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and local fire and rescue teams, encountered challenges in accessing the accident site due to the rough terrain of the mountain trails. Multiple victims required medical attention, with three being airlifted to hospitals and four transported by ambulance. Reports indicate that one of the injured children is in critical condition.
Paul McDonald, the Cherokee County coroner, expressed sorrow over the incident, extending condolences to the families affected and urging the community to keep both the victims and first responders in their thoughts and prayers.
The Indian Mountain ATV Park spans approximately 4,700 acres and offers extensive trails for off-highway vehicles, along with amenities for camping, fishing, and hiking.
