Bargi, Italy – An explosion at a hydroelectric power plant in northern Italy has resulted in a tragic incident, leaving three people dead and four others missing. The blast at the plant in Bargi, near Bologna, also led to five individuals being hospitalized in serious condition. The operator of the plant, Italian utility group Enel, has extended its condolences to the victims and their families and has pledged full cooperation with authorities to determine the cause of the explosion.
Enel Green Power, a subsidiary of Enel, has been actively involved in ongoing efficiency works at the plant. The plant had been entrusted to three major companies, namely Siemens, ABB, and Voith, back in 2022. Prior to the accident, testing was being conducted on the plant’s generation groups, with the first group having been tested in the days leading up to the explosion, while testing on the second group was in progress at the time of the incident.
The explosion is said to have originated in an area of the plant situated approximately 30 meters underwater on Lake Suviana, located about 37 miles from Bologna. Tragically, the four missing individuals are presumed to have perished, as rescue teams have reported that the explosion caused flooding in that area. The three individuals who were confirmed dead were contractors ranging in age from 36 to 73. Reports have indicated that a fire broke out following the explosion of a turbine at the facility.
Enel’s CEO Salvatore Bernabei has personally taken charge of coordinating the company’s response to the incident in collaboration with authorities at the site. The company continues to provide updates on the situation and is striving to support the families and loved ones of those affected by this tragic event. The investigation into the explosion is ongoing as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to this heartbreaking loss of life.
