Tragedy Strikes as Retired Hamilton County Deputy Killed in Alleged Intentional Hit-and-Run During UC Commencement

CINCINNATI — A Hamilton County Sheriff’s deputy has died after being struck by a vehicle while managing traffic near the University of Cincinnati on Friday. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. at the intersection of Martin Luther King Drive and Burnet Woods Drive. This area was particularly busy due to ongoing graduation ceremonies.

According to Cincinnati police, the deputy was outside of his patrol car directing vehicles when he was hit by a car that entered the intersection. Emergency services transported him to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities have yet to disclose the deputy’s identity, pending notification of his family.

Investigators have reported that the driver of the vehicle was 38-year-old Rodney Hinton Jr., who is also the father of an 18-year-old fatally shot by police earlier in the week. Hinton has since been charged with aggravated murder in connection with the deputy’s death.

During a court appearance on Saturday, Hinton faced a courtroom filled with sheriff’s deputies honoring their fallen colleague. His attorney acknowledged the gravity of the charges but noted that Hinton has no prior felony convictions. He referenced the intense emotions surrounding the situation, especially given the recent death of Hinton’s son.

Prosecutors presented evidence suggesting that Hinton deliberately aimed his vehicle at the deputy, asserting that he acted with premeditated intent. They requested a no-bond hearing, while Hinton’s legal counsel sought a continuance for this proceeding. Judge Tyrone Yates ruled that Hinton would remain without bond until the next hearing, scheduled for Tuesday at 9 a.m. He will be held in Clermont County jail under the judge’s orders for safety reasons.

As Hinton was led out of the courtroom, he reportedly told deputies, “I’m going to be gone forever, forever,” highlighting the severity of his situation. The deputy who lost his life had recently retired from the force in December and was participating in special duty for the graduation events.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed his condolences in a statement, saying he was deeply saddened by the deputy’s death in the line of duty and was disturbed by the apparent intentional nature of the act. He extended sympathies to the deputy’s family, friends, and colleagues as the investigation continues.

This incident has sent shockwaves through the community, raising questions about safety during large events and the implications of violence against law enforcement personnel.
